Paul M. Baumann Sr., 94, of Housatonic, retired fire chief

Paul was also a member of the Housatonic Fire Department for 55 years where he was Deputy Chief and Fire Chief for three years at the merger in 1976.

Paul M. Baumann Sr., 94, of North Plain Road in Housatonic, Mass., died peacefully on Sunday April 26, 2015 at his daughter Christine’s home.

Paul was born on February 23, 1921 in Pittsfield son to George and Louise (Maier) Baumann.

He was a 1939 graduate of the former Searles High School. After school Paul proudly served his country in WWII with the U.S Army Air Force as a Tail Gunner on a B-24 in the South Pacific. For his service Paul received Air Medal GO 570 Hq USA FISPA 44 and one Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal, AP Service Ribbon with one Silver Service Star and one Bronze Service Star. After his service Paul worked as an installer and repairman for New England Telephone Company for forty years.

Paul was also a member of the Housatonic Fire Department for 55 years where he was Deputy Chief and Fire Chief for three years at the merger in 1976.

Paul’s wife Helen T. (Ptak) Baumann whom he married on April 28, 1945 in All Saints Church in Housatonic predeceased him on May 17, 2013. Paul is survived by, one son, Paul “Butch” Baumann Jr. and wife Lynn of Sheffield; three daughters, Patricia Salvi and husband Gene of Great Barrington, Christine Jennings and husband Harry of Housatonic, and Cathy Brandt and husband Neal of S. Egremont; three brothers, Peter Baumann of VanDeusenville, Joseph Baumann of Yarmouth Port, Mass., and Gerald Baumann of Lee; four sisters, Patricia Ciolina of Salisbury, Conn., Mary Whitbeck of Salisbury, Ann Costa of VanDeusenville, Mass., and Joan Clark of Matthews N.C.; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife Helen, Paul was predeceased by brothers, Thomas Baumann, James Baumann, John Baumann and George Baumann and by his granddaughter, Heather L. Mead who passed on November 17, 2003.

Funeral Services for Paul M. Baumann Sr., who died April 26, will be held on Thursday April 30, with a liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m in Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Parish Corpus Christi Church, with the Rev. William P. Murphy officiating. Burial will follow with Military Honors in St. Bridget’s Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Wednesday April 29 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME 33 South St., in Great Barrington, Mass. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy in Paul’s memory may be made to Hospice Care in the Berkshires in care of the Birches-Roy Funeral Home at 33 South Street Great Barrington, MA. 01230.
