Irene Magnus, 93, formerly of Hillsdale, N.Y.

Known to many as Idy, she was an avid reader and a remarkable cryptoquip player.

Irene Magnus age, 93, formerly of Hillsdale, N.Y., entered into eternal life on Saturday, March 5, 2016, at Eddy Village Green in Cohoes, N.Y. Irene was born in Bronx, N.Y., on October 7, 1922, daughter of William F. and Anna (Royce) Ward. She was a 1940 graduate of Evander Childs High School.

After high school Irene worked as supervisor of payroll and data recording for Con Edison in New York City for 32 years, retiring in 1973. Known to many as Idy, she was an avid reader and a remarkable cryptoquip player. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and taking walks but most of all she enjoyed the many  trips to Florida and Disney World where she took her niece Carol (James) Bedford, great niece Carly Jones, her daughters Grace and Olivia, and great nephew Jim Bedford. She loved spending time and playing  with Grace and Olivia, teaching them nursery rhymes, reading to them and letting them dress her up with princess crowns, ribbons and jewelry.

Irene’s husband, Frederick J. Magnus, whom she married on October 10, 1947, predeceased her on September 4, 1992.

Aunt Idy will be missed dearly by her extended family and her eight  nieces and five nephews  Carol (James) Bedford, Thomas (Gail) Tighe, William (Marie) Tighe, Catherine Race, Richard (Patricia) Ward, Arlene Brengel,  Delores Leffingwell, Michael (Brenda) Ward, Sue Heath, Peggy (Ron) Squires, William (Barbara) Dawson, Joanne (John) Gaus, Mary (Dustin) Stalker.

Irene is survived by one sister, Marie Heath, and was predeceased by three sisters: Marguerite Tighe, Catherine Weber and Anne Dawson; one brother, Francis Ward; one niece, Patricia Holmes, and one nephew, Joseph (Melody) Ward.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated Friday March 11 at 10 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church with the Rev. William P. Murphy, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Old St. Bridget’s Cemetery in Copake, N.Y.  Calling hours will be Thursday, March 10 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Birches-Roy Funeral Home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Church Restoration Fund in care of Birches-Roy Funeral Home. Condolences may be made through birchesroyfuneralservices.com. A heartfelt thank you is extended to the staff of Eddy Village Green, Building 4, for the excellent and compassionate care given to Irene and the support provided to her family.
