Irene Baron Moskowitz, 89, of Great Barrington

She was a meticulous gardener, a savvy investor, an avid reader, a polished golfer, an astute political observer, and an unrivaled baker of Rugelach. She also loved her Benson & Hedges De Luxe cigarettes and J&B Scotch whiskey sours (tart; no fruit).

Irene Baron Moskowitz, 89, of Great Barrington, passed away peacefully at her home on May 30, 2015.

Born on June 2, 1925 in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late Dr. Israel and Meryl Baron, Irene was a long-time resident of Great Barrington. She worked for many years managing the affairs of the cattle   business run by her husband, the late Harry Moskowitz.

Irene was known for her wit, wisdom, loyalty, elegance, kindness and outsized generosity. She was devoted to her family and loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a meticulous gardener, a savvy investor, an avid reader, a polished golfer, an astute political observer, and an unrivaled baker of Rugelach. She also loved her Benson & Hedges De Luxe cigarettes and J&B Scotch whiskey sours (tart; no fruit).

Irene supported many organizations and individuals, both publicly and privately. She served as a member of various organizations in the Berkshires, most notably, Fairview Hospital, Fairview Women’s Auxiliary, Lee Visiting Nurse Association, Ahavath Sholom, Hevreh of Southern Berkshire, and the Women’s National Republican Club, an organization with which she was once welcomed to the White House.

Irene was the devoted wife of the late Harry Moskowitz of Great Barrington. She was the loving mother of the late Susan Moskowitz Grand of New York City, Craig Moskowitz of Sheffield, Mass., and Dr. Mark Moskowitz and his wife Barbara of Gastonia, N.C. Irene was the grandmother of Jordana Levine and her husband Andrew of Redding, Conn., Mara Handy and her husband Benjamin of Sheffield, Carrie Herrington and her husband Richard of Hillsdale, N.Y., Ayren Pfeifer and her husband Maj. Paul of Beaufort, S.C., Jordan Moskowitz and his wife Nicole of Hillsdale, N.Y., Amanda Moskowitz and her husband Brad Hargreaves of New York City, Daniel Moskowitz and his wife Laren of Hilton Head, S.C., Harrison Moskowitz of Hong Kong and Abigail Moskowitz of Charleston, S.C. Irene is also survived by 12 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were private.
